Yateley Ladies 3 vs. Wallingford 4, Saturday 1st February 2025

Tom Morgan

Final Score: Yateley 1-2 Wallingford

Yateley Ladies 3 took on league leaders Wallingford 4 at home, and despite being the underdogs, put in a phenomenal performance that nearly caused a major upset.

Wallingford arrived with a full squad of 14 and a vocal coach, expecting to dominate, but they quickly realized they were in for a battle. With only one regular defender (Nicki), Yateley’s guest defensive backline—Sarah CA, Jules, and Dobbers—alongside goalkeeper Helen and Lyss at defensive mid held strong. The team soaked up Wallingford’s pressure, keeping them scoreless at halftime.

Buoyed by a positive team talk and some much-needed hydration, Yateley came out fighting in the second half. Their determination paid off when Charlotte made a fantastic baseline drive on the right, delivering a perfect cross to Sprout, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net. The cheers from the home side reflected both the joy and surprise of taking the lead against the league’s top team.

Wallingford responded quickly, using fresh legs from constant player rotations to keep the intensity high. They equalized shortly after and then managed to find a second goal, despite Yateley’s relentless defensive effort.

Though the final score didn’t go in Yateley’s favour, the team can hold their heads high. Every player fought hard, and it was a performance full of grit, teamwork, and determination—one that proved Wallingford were not invincible. A fantastic effort from the entire squad!
