Clinical short corners deny Yateley points

Wimborne Wayfarers 2-1 Yateley

The Ladies 1s travelled to Wimborne to play in monsoon conditions today. Buoyed by three points last weekend, they were keen to turn today’s match into 3 more.

The game started brightly (the hockey – not the weather!) and Yateley pressed forward early in the first half. Despite winning several corners they were unable to convert them. Caty, Loz, Lynn and Rappers worked hard to keep the Wimborne defence on their toes but just couldn’t find the back of the net. Wimborne caught Yateley on the break and won a penalty corner, which they converted with a deflection into the back of the net.

Yateley pressed forward but a goal just could not be found. A second penalty corner for Wimborne was neatly converted with a right ramp leaving Yateley 2-0 down going into half-time. Jen’s half-time talk focused on continuing to press forward as a unit and closing down Wimborne quickly when they are in possession.

Yateley looked like a different team in the second half and Wimborne rarely penetrated the Yateley D. Nicki, Siobhan, Lizzie, Gemma and Jen confidently thwarted any Wimborne attacks and pushed up the pitch. Several more short corners were won by Yateley but still there was no goal to reward their efforts.

Late in the second half Ruth won a free hit just outside the D after some elbows and shoulders from the Wimborne defence. She ran into the D, beat a few players on the way, and took a reverse shot into the bottom corner to bring the score to 2-1.

Yateley’s attacking was relentless, with Wimborne resorting to some very physical hockey to break down play. A second goal could not be found before the final whistle and the game ended 2-1 to Wimborne.

It was a very frustrating match, with Yateley dominating much of the game but unable to convert the chances they had. However, there were lots of positives to take forwards into the next match and it was a good performance which did not reflect the score-line.
