Well fought at Fareham

Fareham 2-1 Yateley

I might run out or words to describe how awesome this 1st XI squad was today. With a big number of regular 1s players unavailable, it was the turn of a number of ladies 2s to step up (again!) and slot into the 1s squad. Every player on the pitch today was 100% worthy of being there to face a skilful Fareham team (with a squad of 16!)
Fareham’s initial 10 minutes was relentless, but Gemma, Jen, Lizzie, Emma, Jo and Gill were a match for their forward line and soaked up attack after attack. Gill was kept busy with some outstanding saves, and sensible hockey saw a frustrated Fareham struggle to find the net.

Yateley did catch Fareham on the break with great attacking from Lynn, Nat, Caty and Janette, but the pressure eventually told with two quick goals from Fareham which meant that Fareham went into half-time 2-0 up.

This is where half-time team talks led by Jen and Gemma come into their own. Focusing on our strengths, playing patient hockey and playing the ball around the back were the key messages.

The second half was a different game. Yateley did exactly what they had agreed and played with composure through the middle of the pitch. This meant that Ruth, Alana and Jen were able to push through midfield and allow the forward line to push up and put the pressure on Fareham.

Janette was unlucky in front of goal with a couple of shots going just wide.
Fareham were clearly not expecting this fight back and although they continued to make the most of some break-away play they were not a match for the defensive line. A mention has to go to Lizzie for ‘that’ block tackle in the D where the ball was won and cleared away with composure beyond her years.

Yateley could feel a goal coming. Jen picked up a ball in midfield and played a perfect pass to the right corner which Ruth picked up on the reverse, and drove along the baseline into the D to win a corner. A Gemma/Ruth routine resulted in a great save from Gemma’s strike; Jen pounced on to the rebound to slot the ball away and bring the score to 2-1.

Despite Yateley continuing to attack in numbers and also deal with Fareham’s pace of counter-attack they could not find the net again and the game finished 2-1 to Fareham.
A genuinely fantastic squad performance with so much positivity on the pitch – we’ll look forward to the return fixture!
