An amazing squad of 18 players arrived on pitch, all full of grit ready to play against Haslemere. This proved a little challenging but the girls showed commitment to their team and when asked, played out of their comfort zones and stretched themselves. Unfortunately we did not have a keeper for this game, so 11 outfield players stepped up, the final score being 4-1 to Haslemere but not without a fight. Last season Haslemere won 9-0, this season saw an immense level of progress in skills, determination and play.
We played 15 min quarters and by the end of the first quarter we were two goals down. The other three quarters were a different story, with quick passing, driving into space, supporting each other, loud communication and the girls were playing proper hockey. A well worked short corner saw Scarlett score a deflected goal from the left hand post. We were in the game, we knew we could score more.
Notching up chance after chance, we were foiled by the Haslemere keeper a number of times. Another short corner ended up in the net, but unfortunately it was off a Yateley foot. Caty came close to scoring half a dozen times; Hattie narrowly missed a chance when she was through on the keeper. The score line doesn’t reflect the balance of the match and the chances we created.
Overall it was a great performance. This was a genuine team effort and, though I’ve mentioned a few names here, ALL the girls played well, adding critical value to overall performance. Thanks to the parents for their support and see you at the next match.
