Match Report: Mens 2nd XI 19th March

Yateley 4-2 Oxford Brookes Uni

The mens 2s won a hard fought game against Oxford Brookes Uni 5s.
Having beaten a group of somewhat hungover students 7-0 last time out, we expected a tougher game this time around, especially after the team turned up suspiciously wearing Oxford HC shirts....

Yateley unfortunately started the game slowly again, but should have been 2-0 up after Liam (open goal) and Kevin (forgot which side was the “strong side”) spurned opportunities which on another day they’d both expect to score.

It was however Oxford Brookes who went into a 2-0 lead half way through the first half as both Yateley centre backs forgot we played in red and ended up passing the ball straight to their attackers who snapped up the opportunities both times.

However, comebacks are starting to become the DNA for the men’s 2s. Shortly before half time, the forwards managed to get some good passing together; Kevin playing Liam in who calmly passed the ball around the keeper and Darren Skinner walked the ball into an empty net to make it 2-1 at half time.

In the second half, Yateley were the strongest team but couldn’t find a goal until around the 50th minute when a storming run from Nick Park drove the ball to the baseline where he pulled it back to the P spot for Kevin to sweep in for the equaliser.
Yateley continued in the ascendancy and Liam scored the third with a good strike from the top of the D into the bottom left corner.

It was then Oxford Brookes woke up and for a nervy 5 minutes, Oxford Brookes looked more likely to score. However with 2 minutes left, the ball fell loose in midfield, Kevin played a through ball which took out their back line and Stuart Brimble swept the ball first time from the tip of the D to cap a memorable win.
