In a new YHC feature, we are looking at bring you closer to those who we have elected to run our club, in the style of a '60 second' interview.
We hope they provide you with some not only light-hearted, but also factual information! Enjoy!!
Name: Sarah Foley (Buckland) – Foley – Chairman, Bar Manager, General Go-To person
What is your job?: Software Consultant focusing on implementation of the Financials for manufacturing and distribution companies.
How long have you been doing this job?: About 7 years (been at the same company for 17 years and had several jobs within the company, so not sure when I became a consultant).
Current side playing, umpiring, coaching? Ladies 4s – just. Level 1 umpire so umpire and play most weeks.
What's your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere hot where I can do not a lot and watch people. Would love to go back to the Maldives (honeymoon destination).
What car do you drive? Ford of course. Just bought a new Focus Navigator, well in June, and just clocked up 5000 miles already
How long have you been at Yateley Hockey Club and how did you get involved?: 22 years I think!! Bought a flat in Aldershot after moving out of parents home in Chertsey. Had only just got into Hockey whilst living at home and was playing for Walton Hockey Club. Went to Aldershot & Farnham training and didn’t like it. I was working with Fiona Whitley at the time and she was playing for Yateley and said I should come along to training. So here I am. Never looked back.
What is the greatest achievement of the club since you have been a member?: Seeing both the Mens & Ladies sides grow. When I joined, there was just about 2 ladies teams and 3 mens teams. The Men reaching a regional league and the Ladies reaching South have been amazing achievements. The club is still growing with an amazingly huge youth side. An even greater achievement will be to get ALL those Juniors playing in the senior sides.
Any embarrassing hockey stories you would like to share? Only from hockey tour, so probably best to leave this question.
Any memorable away trips? Had a game down at Portsmouth and some of the ladies in the team were renowned for getting lost whilst driving to away games. So we get to the A303 junction on the M3 going south and we notice that 2 cars have scooted off down the A303 when the rest of us are on the M3. As you know, you can’t turnaround easily, so we just had to hope that they realized they had lost us and find their own way. They did eventually turn up but not before one of the cars having a collision on a roundabout. But that wasn’t all, after the game, the other car that went the wrong way, wouldn’t start, so they had to wait at the ground for the AA/RAC… Boy, was that a long day J But, I think we actually won the game.
What is your greatest personal hockey achievement? Being awarded the Presidents Cup.
Where will the club be in 3 years?: With it’s own astro, and an extra side or 2 in the seniors.
What advice would you give to anyone who wants to improve on their hockey? Keep training and perservering and encouraging your team mates. This is a “Team” game. But at the same time, try to enjoy it.
From the team members past and present who would be in your dream team and why? Well I’ve played with a lot of great players and my memory is shocking to remember all of those I have played with, but here goes:-
GK: Miki – what a nutter in goal, no fear (but I was scared a few times)
Sweeper: Has to be Lucy Lillicrap – Amazing – shame she’s injured at the moment
CB: Ams – nothing gets past Amerley and she always looks so elegant and innocent.
LB: Gemma Baugh – timid at first, but now a great all round player
RB: Vicky White – strong, verbal, ball on feet more than me
LM: Colette Davidson (Ward) – always encourages the team
RM: Louisa England – first game for the senior ladies at the mere age of 13 and never looked back
DCM: Katie-Jayne Turner – great player in whatever position and always wanted to play up front.
ACM: Clare Viney (Thompson) – she just keeps running
CF: Chrissie Collins – amazing positioning and great goal scoring record
CF: Jax – stamina is incredible and again, like Chrissie a great goal scoring record
Subs: Kim Preston (when she remembers to shoot inside the “D”) Emily Lott – great control of balls sent to her at high speed
Judy Church – only played alongside Judy for a short while, but she was fantastic
Clare Rapley – can score some amazing solo goals.
