Frustrating finish

Yateley 4-4 Trojans

Every game against the Trojans ends with a battle. 2 sides that enjoy a competitive fixture and normally you can bank on at least 4 goals being scored. Today’s home fixture was a chilly one but the game itself was full of fiery tackles and a few hot headed moments. Who runs the world? It wasn’t girls this time, the umpires run the world now! 3 greens cards and some cracking decisions left the players battling to secure a win for their team.

Trojans capitalised on a defensive error to take an early lead but Yateley pressed on with plenty of close calls. Just before half time, a well worked short corner allowed Jim Boffin to score his 10th goal of the season and tie the sides at 1-1 for halftime. After the last fixture between these two titans ended with a 3-3 draw, surely someone would grab the points?

Trojans battled on early again in the second half and a well worked team goal allowed them to retake the lead. Yateley weren’t done yet, with another string of attacks, the momentum changed direction again, this time with a miracle! Mark Laskey, infamous for his constant reverse shooting, managed to score with his strong side! Something unseen by many and thought to be a long lost myth. Was this actually happening? Trojans players and Yateley players alike, confused about what they has just witnessed!

The game became feisty over the next 15minutes as 2 Trojans players and 1 Yateley player- Lee Creswell saw green on separate occasions for arguing with the umpires.

Yateley couldn’t take advantage of the extra man and when they lost Lee Cresswell, the Trojans showed Yateley how to do it, scoring twice in the space of 5 minutes to take a healthy 4-2 lead. Yateley, knowing time was still on the clock got their tails up and drove hard, nearly scoring twice. A goal finally came for in form striker Jim Boffin who brought the game back to 4-3. With only minutes on the clock, Mark Laskey skilfully waltzed his way into the D and was stick tackled along the way...a short corner to end the game? A final roll of the dice to grab a well fought 4-4 draw? No...to Yateley players it was a tough pill to swallow and some thinking it was slightly controversial.

Captain, Phil Cundy, did appear as a forward substitute late on and fired a shot that was well saved by the keeper. Despite injury prone it was nice to see him back on the pitch. No goal and no celebration though as he made more empty promises to the few crazy and committed fans at pitch side.
Moral is...You win some, You lose some. This time we lost. We go again next week, harder and better against Andover.

Congratulations to Justin Hatch for winning Man of the match with his solid performance.
