A game of two halves

Yateley 3-3 Fareham

The anticipation of the first league game back after a months break and the eagerly awaited return of Captain Janette from injury meant the Ladies 2s were in high spirits for their home fixture vs Fareham 3s.

The first whistle blew and once any remaining Christmas cobwebs had been ironed out, Yateley settled into the game and began to exert their position as the stronger team. An early short corner marked the start of a flurry of attempts on goal, with the 2s unlucky not to covert.

Fareham, unwilling to stay on the back foot for long, retaliated with a succession of short corners, however GK Kate and centre backs Hobbit and Jo successfully cleared each attempt that came their way.

Yateley’s perseverance was soon rewarded as the team worked together to move the ball up the pitch, leading to a pass from Ruth to Hattie on the right of the D, who then crossed it in to Nat ready to send the ball across the line to take the lead.

Spurred on by the lead, Yateley continued their pursuit with a determined midfield consisting of Alana, Jules and Clara driving the ball towards goal. Approaching half time, Janette proved she was well and truly back, setting up Nat with a 1v1 with the keeper, who with a reverse sweep and tumble to the floor made it 2-0 to Yateley.

In the second half, an assortment of injuries led to a number Yateley playing out of position. This saw momentum shift in favour of the opposition, allowing Fareham to claim a goal back to make it 2-1.

Yateley seemed back in it, when Caty hit a clean strike into the bottom left corner bringing the score to 3-1. Efforts from Janette and Ruth were unlucky not to result in any goals, and left and right halves Hills and Abi remained strong, but Fareham battled back, clinching not one but two goals before the final whistle was blown.

Final Score 3-3, not the result we wanted or deserved, but looking forward to another chance at 3 points away to US Portsmouth next week.
