Leighton Buzzard 1-4 Yateley
The Ladies 1s started their league campaign with an uncomfortably early departure for their away match with Leighton Buzzard! Having narrowly missed out on promotion last year, and with some significant changes within the squad, we really wanted to start the season on a high.
The first-half did not really show what Yateley were capable of and we conceded fairly early on from a penalty corner. Yateley finally started to settle and Kealey opened the Yateley scoring with a well-taken goal just before half-time making the score 1-1.
The half-time team-talk obviously helped and Yateley looked like a different team in the second half, finally linking up more consistently and putting Leighton Buzzard under a lot of pressure. This pressure paid off when the pitch opened up in front of Sophie who took the ball the entire length of the pitch and slipped the ball across the D to Ellen who was able to give Yateley the lead.
Yateley really upped their pace from this point and a fantastic pick from Hannah in a well-set press led to a blistering strike from her at the top of the D and made the score 3-0. Yateley continued to win penalty-corners and Leighton Buzzard rarely threatened the Yateley D. Heading towards the final minutes, another Yateley penalty-corner was struck perfectly by Hannah making the final score 4-1.
Yateley made harder work of this match than they needed to but the second-half showed what this squad is capable of with goals form open-play and corners.
