Match Report: Men’s 3rd XI 7 Oct

Wycombe 4s 3 – 3 Yateley 3s

A hot and sunny Saturday in October (who would have thought we would be saying that?) took Yateley’s 3s across to Wycombe for what would be a tough test for the flying 3s, coming into this game on the back of two straight league wins out of two.

Travelling without our leader Willy, Dynamic Danno took over leadership duties and ran his team through the tactics and line-up that would end up bringing back a hard earned point for Yateley.

From the first whistle, Yateley found themselves slow to off the mark, withstanding some initial pressure from Wycombe before pressing forward themselves. However it was Wycombe that would strike the first blow, a close range finish after an initial scrabble in the D. Yateley were slow to react and it was not long before Wycombe scored again and doubled their lead, this time from a well worked short corner.

However, this 2nd goal got Yateley back on the pace and less then 5 minutes had been played of the restart and Yateley had a goal back. Some brilliant play between Chris Wright and Jake Morgan up top saw the ball come to Kevin Manning just past the P spot and he made no mistake in slotting it past the Wycombe keeper. Game on!

The following 10 minutes were end to end, with chances coming for both Wycombe and Yateley – but it was Wycombe who grabbed their 3rd and final goal of the day. Another short corner but this time messier than the last, with the ball flying across the D before being tucked away. 3-1 with less then 5 to go. But that was not the end of the first half action there, as Yateley responded fantastically with their second goal of the day right on the brink of half time. In something straight off the training ground, the ball started with Charlie Marsden who fed it straight through to Henry Chung, who played it down the line to Chris who would get the ball into the P spot for Jake Morgan to shoot, well saved by the keeper but Samuel Qua on the keepers rebound to score a true poachers goal!

After a bewitching first half, it was Wycombe 3 – 2 Yateley at the break.

A strong team talk followed from stand in captain Danno, and Yateley came out at the break with a clear plan in mind – get the equaliser. 2nd half was all Yateley, pushing and pushing for the goal that would bring them level. Some great play from Stuart Brimble saw the ball fall to George Williams, who was unlucky not to find the back of the goal due to some good Wycombe goalkeeping.

Wycombe were holding strong but eventually, the Yateley pressure proved too much and in something straight off Wednesday nights training sessions, Yateley had their equaliser. A pass from Samuel saw Zachary Pyne with the ball just inside the D on the byline, and a pass straight across the D to Kevin Manning, who with one simple push had the ball nestled in the bottom corner. Wild celebrations ensued and Yateley were on the bounce for another.

The last 10 minutes of the game saw some frantic end to end hockey, with some brilliant saves from Dylan Cox keeping the scores at a draw. The final whistle went and it was to be a hard earned draw for the 3s in the October heat.
