...positive vibes...it's early days!

Yateley Mens 2’s in Fleet Tourney

Yateley Men’s 2XI were very much the underdogs in this tough hockey tournament in Fleet, playing against both Luton and Fleet+Ewshot men’s 1XI sides. Yateley were led out by vice-captain Tom Pask, with new Captain Philip Cundy away. The team started very strong and crafted plenty of chances against Luto, showing that we weren’t going to be a pushover.

This Luton side boasted no changes from the side that beat us last year convincingly 4-0. However, for every chance Luton had, Yateley responded positively, bringing good vibes to a very closely fought match. The final score ended with Luton just nabbing the victory 3-2 but were left feeling relieved and unnervingly surprised by the tenacity and the graft that Yateley demonstrated.

Yateley’s final game was against a young and very fit Fleet and Ewshot team who are in the same division, giving both sides the opportunity to scope out their opposition ready for the league fixtures.
Fleet and Ewshot took a 2-0 lead with some very good hockey but Yateley showed determination, graft and passion to keep their heads up and fight back. Yateley’s attitude and energy allowed more creative play and chances that pinned Fleet and Ewshot back.

Turning the screw Yateley battled back to bring the scores level at 2-2! However, tiredness and a lack of fitness finally scuppered Yateley chances of any points, leaving them with horrible visions of déjà vu from last season, after Fleet and Ewshot scored the game winning goal with only minutes left on the clock. Another 3-2 loss but the efforts of all players must be commended.

Heads held high Yateley 2s took the positives from the games and will go again next week searching for their first win of the season. All youngsters that have made the step up to the men’s 2XI played fantastically well, with congratulations going to Calum Henderson who sealed man of the matches!

Thanks also go to the Yateley Men’s 1XI players who rocked up to show some support from the pitch-side, driving our players to keep their heads and fight for every ball.
